About After School Classes at Brooklyn Science Spot
Special Attention For Every Child at Brooklyn Science Spot
Brooklyn Science Spotpot’s after-school programs for ages 5–10 turn late afternoons into the best part of the school day. Our classes connect to every domain of science, so kids experience physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, earth science, and more through hands-on projects rather than worksheets. Inspired by the beloved programs created at Carmelo the Science Fellow, our after-school classes blend big laughs with big ideas so kids can unwind, explore, and discover.
“Inspired By "Carmelo the Science Fellow"
A typical afternoon at Brooklyn Science Spot
Children arrive after school (with the option to pick up from select local schools), have a snack, and then dive straight into a high-energy, experiment-filled session. Each day features a different scientific focus, but always with the same recipe: inquiry, experimentation, discussion, and a “wow” moment they can’t wait to tell you about on the way home. We keep group sizes small and age bands tight (5–7, 8–10 when possible) so instructors can tailor challenges to the right level of complexity.
Classes that span every domaine of science
Our after-school classes are designed as a rotating menu of themes so children experience the full spectrum of science over the course of a season:
- Physics & Engineering: Kids build bridges, roller coasters, catapults, and marble runs, testing how force, motion, gravity, and friction work in real time. They tweak designs, measure outcomes, and learn that failure is just data in disguise.
- Chemistry & Kitchen Science: Young scientists mix safe household ingredients to explore reactions, color changes, bubbles, and slime. They learn to make predictions, observe carefully, and connect what they see to real-world chemistry.
- Biology & Creature Features: Children meet live animals, examine shells, feathers, and bones, and explore habitats, adaptations, and life cycles. They practice gentle handling and develop respect for living things.
- Earth & Space Science: From volcano models and rock samples to mini “weather labs” and simple space missions, kids explore our planet, the atmosphere, and the universe beyond.
- Technology, Robotics & Coding: Through simple robots, circuits, and kid-friendly coding platforms, children learn how technology works and how they can control it, not the other way around.
Across all classes, we weave in observation, measurement, data collection, and reflection, so kids build genuine scientific thinking skills.
Carmelo Piazza
Inspired by Carmelo the Science Fellow’s classic classes
Brooklyn Science Spot proudly builds on the legacy of Carmelo the Science Fellow, known for turning serious science into seriously fun classes. While offerings change by season, many of our themes grow out of his most popular sessions, such as:
Gross but Cool Science
Experiments with goo, oozes, and things that squish and stretch, all while learning about states of matter, polymers, and the human body.
Things That Go Boom (Safely)
High-energy demonstrations and kid-led experiments that show how gas, pressure, and chemical reactions can create eye-popping effects in a safe, controlled setting.
Creature Club
Weekly interactions with classroom animals, from reptiles to insects, focusing on care, behavior, and biology.
Mini Makers & Inventors
Open-ended building challenges using recycled materials, simple circuits, and basic tools so kids can design and test their own inventions.
These beloved class concepts give Brooklyn Science Spotpot its signature feel: part comedy show, part science lab, all authentic learning.
Bell to Blast-Off
Transportation and school pick-up
Transportation and school pick-up
We know afternoons can be hectic for families, so Brooklyn Science Spotpot offers pick-up from select local schools (subject to availability and distance). Our staff meet children at dismissal and bring them safely to the center, so caregivers can head home or back to work knowing their child is heading into a structured, enriching program. Once at Brooklyn Science Spot, kids transition from school mode to exploration mode, with time to decompress before diving into experiments.
Big Energy. Kid-Ready.
Age-appropriate, high-energy instructors
Our instructors are more than teachers—they’re science entertainers and guides. Every class is led by adults who understand how 5–10-year-olds think, move, and learn. They use humor, storytelling, and dramatic demonstrations to hook kids’ attention, then shift into inquiry and discovery so children are doing the thinking and experimenting themselves. Lessons are scaffolded so younger children get concrete, sensory experiences while older kids tackle deeper questions, more complex builds, and richer reflections.
In every class, you’ll see instructors:
• Ask open-ended questions (“What do you notice?”
“What do you think will happen next?”).
• Encourage kids to test their ideas, not just guess.
• Celebrate mistakes as part of the process.
•Connect experiments to real-life phenomena kids care about.
Where Curiosity Wins
Inquiry and discovery, every day
At Brooklyn Science Spot, we believe the power of inquiry should be present in every moment of after-school. Kids don’t just watch experiments; they design them. They don’t just hear facts; they uncover them. Each session ends with some form of “share out”—kids talk about what they tried, what they noticed, and what new questions they now have. Over time, they build not just knowledge of specific science topics, but an identity as scientists who are capable, curious, and creative.
