Who We Are?

Carmelo Piazza of Brooklyn Science Spot

Core Mission

The mission of Brooklyn Science Spot is to be the place where children’s natural questions are not just answered but amplified, helping them turn “Why?” and “What if?” into experiments, projects, and discoveries they can see, touch, and feel. We aim to create a vibrant STEM ecosystem—part lab, part museum, part neighborhood hangout—where learning is messy, joyful, and driven by kids’ own interests. By centering inquiry as the engine of learning, we help children build not only knowledge, but also confidence, resilience, and a sense of themselves as capable problem solvers.

“Inspired By "Carmelo the Science Fellow"

The role of Carmelo the Science Fellow

Brooklyn Science Spot is rooted in the vision and experience of Carmelo the Science Fellow, whose decades of work with children and families have shown that science is the perfect medium for making learning fun, rigorous, and deeply meaningful. Carmelo’s approach—high-energy demonstrations, real-world connections, and a relentless focus on “try it and see what happens”—shapes every part of our mission, from how we design experiments to how we train staff and welcome families. His philosophy ensures that every child, regardless of background or previous experience with STEM, feels seen, inspired, and invited to join the world of science.

Inquiry at the heart of learning

At Brooklyn Science Spot, inquiry is not a moment in the day—it is the method. We design our experiences around children’s questions, allowing them to observe, wonder, hypothesize, test, and revise their thinking across all domains: science, technology, engineering, math, art, literacy, and social-emotional learning. Whether a child is building a bridge, coding a robot, exploring circuits, or caring for a live creature, we ask guiding questions that help them notice patterns, make predictions, collect data, and reflect on what they discovered. We believe that when kids learn how to ask better questions, they learn how to think more deeply, listen more carefully, and engage more fully with the world around them.

A one-stop STEM shop

Brooklyn Science Spotpot is intentionally designed as a one-stop STEM shop for families. Under one roof, children can attend after-school classes, weekend workshops, school-break and summer camps, and unforgettable science-filled birthday parties. Alongside these programs, families can browse thoughtfully curated science books, toys, kits, and materials that extend inquiry-based learning into the home. Our space blurs the line between store and lab, so that the objects on our shelves are not just products—they are invitations to experiment, build, investigate, and play.

Environment: where zoo meets museum meets lab

Our mission includes creating an environment that feels like a living science playground: where a mini-zoo of classroom creatures, museum-style displays, tinkering stations, and immersive sensory elements all work together to spark questions. Children might meet a reptile, explore magnified specimens, build a simple machine, and then find a related book or kit to take home—all within a single visit. Every corner is designed to be interactive, child-centered, and photo-worthy, not for aesthetics alone, but to capture and celebrate the moments when curiosity turns into discovery.

Teaching, staff, and family partnership

Brooklyn Science Spot’s mission lives through a team of educators and facilitators who share Carmelo’s passion for playful rigor and inquiry-based learning. Our staff is trained not just to “run activities,” but to listen to children’s ideas, scaffold their thinking, and turn mistakes into powerful learning moments. We view families as partners in this work, offering them tools, language, and simple at-home experiments so that the power of inquiry doesn’t end when a class or party is over. Through ongoing communication, workshops, and resources, we help caregivers understand why asking questions, encouraging exploration, and allowing productive messiness are essential to children’s growth.

Long-term vision

Ultimately, Brooklyn Science Spotpot exists to ensure that early experiences with science are joyful, meaningful, and empowering. By placing the power of inquiry at the center of every interaction and leveraging the vision of Carmelo the Science Fellow, we aim to inspire children who don’t just memorize facts, but who know how to explore, question, create, and change their world. Our long-term mission is to see kids leave our space not only with cool projects and fun memories, but with a lasting identity: “I am a scientist. I am an inventor. I am a thinker. My questions matter.”
