Brooklyn Science Spot School Trips
Brooklyn Science Spotpot school trips immerse students in the best of the physical and living world—up close with animals, then hands-on in the lab—so science feels real, relevant, and unforgettable. This is not a “sit and listen” trip; it’s a full-body, minds-on experience where students observe, touch, question, and experiment from the moment they arrive.

Overview of the trip
Our signature Brooklyn Science Spotpot field trip is a two-part experience:
- A biodiversity and animal encounter, where students meet, touch, and gently hold classroom animals as they explore how living things are alike and different.
- A lab-based chemistry session, where students become scientists in goggles and gloves, mixing, measuring, and reacting safe materials to see the invisible forces at work in the physical world.
Every experience is age-appropriate, standards-aligned, and designed to support classroom learning in life science, physical science, and scientific inquiry.
Part 1: Biodiversity and animal encounters
In the first half of the trip, students step into our mini “living lab,” where they meet a variety of live animals that highlight the incredible biodiversity of our planet. Depending on the age group and availability, children might meet reptiles, amphibians, insects, small mammals, or other classroom-friendly creatures.
During this session, students will:
- Observe animals up close, noting features such as scales, fur, feathers, body shape, and movement.
- Learn about habitats, adaptations, and basic needs (food, water, shelter, space).
- Safely touch and, when appropriate, gently hold animals under close supervision.
- Compare and contrast different species to build an understanding of classification and biodiversity.
Our instructors lead discussions using student questions as the starting point:
- Why does this animal have this body covering?
- How does this animal move, and why?
- Where would this animal live in the wild?
We emphasize empathy, respect, and proper handling so students learn to care for living things and understand their role in protecting habitats.
The power of inquiry
At Brooklyn Science Spot, inquiry is at the heart of every school trip. Our educators guide students to:
- Ask their own questions about animals and reactions.
- Use their senses to gather data.
- Share ideas with peers and revise their thinking as they see new evidence.
Rather than simply telling students the answers, we help them discover patterns and explanations on their own. This builds confidence, critical thinking, and a true sense of ownership over their learning.
Logistics and customization
We welcome school groups in grades K–5 and tailor each trip to your students’ age, prior knowledge, and curriculum focus. Before your visit, we’ll coordinate with teachers to:
- Align the trip with current classroom units (e.g., ecosystems, properties of matter, life cycles).
- Adjust the complexity of both the animal and chemistry components.
- Discuss any accommodations or specific needs in your group.
Trips typically run 90–120 minutes, depending on grade level and schedule. We provide all materials, safety equipment, and experienced educators so teachers can participate alongside their students or simply observe and document the experience.
Part 2: Hands-on chemistry lab
After exploring the living world, students move into our lab zone to investigate the physical world through chemistry. Here, they put on goggles and become chemists, working with age-appropriate materials to see reactions unfold right before their eyes.
Possible lab experiences include:
- Color-changing reactions to explore indicators and acids/bases.
- Safe “volcano” or bubbling reactions that show gas production and changes of state.
- Mixing and testing different solutions to explore solubility, mixtures, and separations.
- Building simple models (like molecules or particles) to visualize what they can’t see.
Throughout the lab, students will:
- Make predictions before each experiment.
- Measure, mix, and observe carefully.
- Record what they see, hear, and smell (when appropriate).
- Reflect on what changed and why.
This section reinforces key physical science concepts such as matter, states of matter, and chemical versus physical change, while giving students the thrill of real experimentation.
Why schools love Brooklyn Science Spot trips
Teachers choose Brooklyn Science Spot because of our trips:
- Bring abstract science concepts to life with real animals and real lab work.
- Offer a carefully balanced experience of the living and physical sciences in one visit.
- Reinforce scientific practices—observing, predicting, testing, and explaining.
- Leave students buzzing with excitement and new questions to explore back in the classroom.
If you share your typical grade levels and class sizes, I can help draft a version of this page that speaks directly to those teachers and includes suggested trip lengths for each grade.
